The verification principle: Verified doesn't mean perfect — it means you've done proportionate due diligence for the order size. A $500 sample order requires different verification than a $50,000 production order. Scale your verification to the financial exposure.

Five Verification Layers — Scaled to Order Value

LAYER 01 — ALL ORDERS

Business registration check

Request the supplier's business license (营业执照, yíngyè zhízhào). Every legitimate Chinese manufacturer has one. Verify it against China's National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (国家企业信用信息公示系统) at gsxt.gov.cn — it's publicly searchable in English for company name lookups. Check: registration date, registered capital, and business scope matches the product you're sourcing.

LAYER 02 — ORDERS ABOVE $2,000

Factory photos and video call

Request photos of the production facility, equipment, and current production floor. Then schedule a video call (WeChat, WhatsApp, Zoom) to walk the floor live. A legitimate factory will comply. A trading company pretending to be a factory will hesitate or redirect. This takes 30 minutes and filters out most non-factory suppliers.

LAYER 03 — ORDERS ABOVE $5,000

Certification and test report request

Request relevant product certifications for your target market. Ask for existing test reports, not just certification claims. A factory that regularly exports to North America will have FCC/IC, CPSC, ASTM, or FDA documentation readily available. A factory that hasn't exported to your market will need time to prepare — factor this into your timeline.

LAYER 04 — ORDERS ABOVE $15,000

Third-party factory audit

Commission a factory audit through SGS, Bureau Veritas, QIMA, or Intertek. Cost: $300–500 for a standard audit. The auditor visits the factory, verifies production capability, checks worker conditions, and confirms documentation. Report delivered within 5–7 business days. For any first order above $15,000, this is the most reliable and cost-effective verification tool available.

LAYER 05 — ONGOING ORDERS

Pre-shipment inspection

Order a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) when goods are 80–100% complete. An inspector visits the factory, checks quantity, quality against your specs, and carton marking. Cost: $200–300. This is the primary defense against receiving goods that don't match the sample. Worth it for any order you can't afford to return.

Red Flags: When to Walk Away

  • Prices significantly below all other quotes. If one supplier quotes 40% below everyone else, they're cutting corners somewhere — materials, production quality, or they're a scammer.
  • No business license or evasiveness about company information. Every legitimate Chinese manufacturer will provide their business registration number without hesitation.
  • Requests for full upfront payment via personal bank account or cryptocurrency. Legitimate factories use company accounts and accept 30% deposit / 70% before shipment.
  • Unable to provide test reports for your market. If a supplier claims they regularly export to the US or Canada but can't produce FCC or CPSC documentation, they haven't.
  • Unwilling to allow factory audit or video call. Factories that decline verification requests are typically hiding something about their actual production capability.
  • Communication exclusively through personal WeChat, not a company account. Legitimate manufacturers use company WeChat accounts and have English-speaking export sales teams.
  • Sample quality dramatically better than production quality. Request two samples at different times — some factories send hand-finished samples that don't represent production standards.
